About

Greetings, my name is Marc. Husband to one, father to two. I live and work in York, Pennsylvania.

My career is split thus:

The Present and Future: I spend my days working for the U.S. federal government, focusing on release engineering. You may think, “Boring”. But most days I’ve got my hands in python, clojure, fabric, jenkins, mongo, postgres, and so on. Much of my daily work is new to me… a departure from the technology I’ve used for the past 10+ years. Consequently, I’ve come to think of this time as a kind of “Re-awakening”.

The Formative Years: Prior to the Re-awakening, I worked in the verticals of scientific journal publishing, financial services, and government contracting. The bulk of that time was spent in ColdFusion and Java, moving toward Groovy/Grails at the end. As a CF developer, I contribute to OSS projects such as MXUnit, CFMongoDB, and CFConcurrent. I hope the friendships I forged as part of the CF Community last well into the future.

Career 1.0: I’m the English teacher turned programmer your CompSci professors warned you about. I taught high school English for @4 years, in both Pennsylvania and Maryland, with a focus on British literature and composition.

As a classroom teacher, in my various tech jobs as a CF developer, and in my new role working with quite a diverse mix of developers and designers, one theme has endured: being surrounded by incredible colleagues. I’ve been blessed to share my days with some of the most interesting, dedicated, talented people you can imagine. I hope you’re as fortunate as I.

Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven; that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.
